Insulin is the principle hormone responsible for the control of glucose metabolism. Secretion of insulin is mainly controlled by the plasma glucose concentration and the hormone has a number of important metabolic actions. Insulin concentrations are severely reduced in insulin-dependent diabetes (Type 1 diabetes) and some other conditions such as hypopituarism. Insulin concentrations are raised in non-insulin dependent diabetes (Type 2 diabetes), insulinoma and in some types of endocrine dysfunction such as Cushing's syndrome and acromegaly.
Oxidised Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) is an atherogenic, plaque-specific protein directly involved in the initiation and the progression of atherosclerotic lesions. Plasma levels of oxidised LDL are markedly elevated in patients with angiographically proven coronary artery disease and it is now becoming clear that circulating levels of oxidised LDL are markers of coronary atherosclerosis.
Apolipoprotein (a) is also being researched as an independant risk factor for atherosclerosis.
ELISA assays are available for both analytes.
